Sophie Chen presents in this exhibition a series of photographs taken over the past three years across countries that have shaped her sense of belonging – China, the United States, and now Spain, where she lives.
“I was born in New Zealand but shaped by Chinese culture and memories; I speak with an American accent but think in a language that shifts depending on place and company. This fluidity allows me to find comfort almost anywhere, yet it also leaves me feeling unrooted. I’ve lived away from China for so long that I sometimes feel distant from my own origins, yet I know I will never fully belong to the foreign cultures I’ve since encountered.
In learning to exist between places, I’ve begun to search for home not in nationality or permanence, but in an intangible sense of familiarity — found in the people I meet and the spaces I inhabit”
This collection was created from the exhibition held in Barcelona in November 2025 a collective exhibition, titled “From Far, Ara Aquí,” brings together stories from near and far.
